As an interracial individual, you may be faced with many issues regarding your ethnicity. Depending on your location and your race, you may be subjected to a great deal of anguish because you are interracial. Unfortunately, romance and dating may be made more difficult for you also.

It is interesting to note that the term “interracial” most often is used to describe a person that is Caucasian and African American, and rarely used to describe any other mix of ethnicity. For this reason, the issues presented in the dating world for a person that is Caucasian and African American will be considered. However, these issues could very easily apply to a person of any race.

You physical appearance as an interracial individual will very likely be a contributing factor in how the dating world and potential mates may respond to you. For example, Mariah Carey probably did not have a problem finding a date or being accepted initially, as she does not appear to be interracial. If your appearance favors one race over the other, you will likely be more accepted by that race. Likewise, if you feel more of a connection to one race over the other, you will probably feel more comfortable surrounding yourself with people from that particular race. Many interracial people do not consider themselves “either/or” and can relate to both aspects of their cultural heritage. This is ideal. However, other people may be a different story.

If you are comfortable in your race and do not make it an issue, you may be surprised to learn that it can be an issue for other people. For example, if you physically favor one race, such as Mariah Carey, and start a relationship with someone that does not realize you are interracial, you may find some unwilling to continue in the relationship once they become aware of your ethnic origin. It is a sad truth that there is still a great deal of racism in this country and some may be un-accepting of you for no other reason than your race.

If race is an issue, an interracial person may have a difficult time finding a mate that accepts them. It may be difficult to find another interracial person that you are attracted to, but some people of an individual race may be less accepting.

While racism still exists, it is important to know everyone does not think race is an issue in the least bit. You should make it a point to get out and meet people to find the right person that does not consider race to be a factor. In fact, there are also people that prefer to date an interracial person, because of the beautiful physical characteristics common of interracial people.

If you are at a loss at finding a mate in your area, try an online dating service to widen your possibilities and meet new people. They are out there; you just have to know where to look.

Luckily, as interracial relationships are becoming more accepted, interracial people are not ostracized as they once were. There are areas of the country that are less sophisticated, but for the most part, there is an overall acceptance. If you are located in an area where your race is an issue, you may consider relocating to find people that will not be as closed-minded. In the right geographic area, being interracial will not be an issue in the least bit. However, this does not mean dating will be easy – then you just have to face all of the same problems as everyone else!
